Canyon Lake is one of the most spectacular lakes in the Sonoran Desert. The 9 mile stretch going up stream towards Apache Lake is unbelievable, majestic, and a must do but what many don’t realize is that there is a different section of the lake that you can experience only by paddleboard or kayak. Yak N Sup at Canyon Lake Marina is located right on the water at Canyon Lake with kayaks and paddleboards readily available for you to use at your leisure. We offer self guided tours, guided tours, private lessons, sunset and full moon tours right here in the superstition mountains.
Some of the best paddle areas in Arizona can be found at Canyon Lake Arizona! A couple of our favorite paddle spots at Canyon Lake are paddling through La Barge and Tortilla Creek on the east side of Canyon Lake. These areas are only accessible by kayak, paddleboard or hiking. These are non motorized areas so you don’t have to worry about jet skis or boats buzzing by. If you are facing the water at Acacia Recreation Site or Palo Verde boat ramp 1 La Barge and Tortilla creek are to the right or east of you. Canyon Lake is one of the most spectacular lakes in the Sonoran Desert.
La Barge Creek can be easily accessed by parking at Boulder Recreation Site or from renting from Yak N Sup at Canyon Lake Marina and paddling on the side of the marina to get through to La Barge cove. As you paddle into La Barge cove from the main part of the lake you will pass Boulder Recreation site and head into the canyon where you will notice an energy shift. Shifting into the motorless section of Canyon Lake you will paddle through canyon walls as high as 900 feet. Often you will most likely sight Arizona’s beautiful great Blue Heron hanging out on a lower cliff, you can also witness their massive wingspan as they take flight. Blue herons will not be the only critter you can see on your journey. We share this lake with Big horn sheep, fish, eagles, wood ducks, geese, egrets, hawks, turkey vultures, deer, javelina, skunks, otters and many other desert dwelling animals that call this place home.
As you paddle through the high walls of La Barge canyon you will be blown away by the red rock. Some compare the rock formations to Sedona, Arizona while others say it feels like we are paddling through mars. One thing everyone agrees on is the energy is the best and you exit feeling lighter, a sense of calmness and stress free.
Paddling in La Barge or Tortilla Creek from mid January to mid April is one of our favorite times of year. There are seasonal creeks that run this time of year in Canyon Lake. As you paddle down the cove you can hear the soothing sound of water running. You can park your paddle equipment and hike upstream at either of these creeks for miles as you adventure into the Superstition Mountains.
Each time you come to Canyon Lake you will experience a different vibe. Different times of the year the sunrise and sunset varies, the moonrise changes, shadows on the mountains are different, temperatures fluctuate, and seasonal streams and waterfalls that tributary into the lake will appear. So if you think you have done Canyon Lake you have to ask yourself but have I experienced Canyon Lake in the winter, spring, fall, summer nights, early morning, evening, sunset, full moon, no moon, crescent moon? If you didn’t answer yes to all of the following you need to get back over here because you are missing out.Get away from the noise of the city, come to Canyon lake and experience the calm waters in LaBarge Creek and Tortilla Creek, the best paddle destination in Arizona.
